Nonbelievers – leave Christmas alone!

Silent Night

I just read a great article written by Garrison Keillor and published on the Baltimore Sun website here. You need to read it but let me give you a little introduction first.

For those who may not know him, Garrison Keillor has become infamous as a result of his radio program, “A Prairie Home Companion” airing on public radio stations each week. You can get a taste of his dry humor by visiting his website here.

Keillor has a very dry wit that may require some work to appreciate. I have enjoyed his show for years. It includes mixed “radio acting,” music & his personal monologues about his “home town” which he calls,  The News From Lake Wobegon.

Back to the Christmas article… Keillor criticizes the nonbelievers who have re-written Christmas songs such as “Silent Night” to NOT include Jesus. Here is a quote that puts it into perspective…

If you don’t believe Jesus was God, OK, go write your own … “Silent Night” and leave ours alone. This is spiritual piracy and cultural elitism, and we Christians have stood for it long enough. And all those lousy holiday songs by Jewish guys that trash up the malls every year, Rudolph and the chestnuts and the rest of that dreck. Did one of our guys write “Grab your loafers, come along if you wanna, and we’ll blow that shofar for Rosh Hashanah“? No, we didn’t.

Christmas is a Christian holiday – if you’re not in the club, then buzz off. Celebrate Yule instead or dance around in druid robes for the solstice. Go light a big log, go wassailing and falalaing until you fall down, eat figgy pudding until you puke, but don’t mess with the Messiah.

Christmas does not need any improvements.

To which, I say, AMEN!!!

Now,  go read the entire article and enjoy even more of Keillor’s dry wit & while you are there, leave a comment & tell him that you and I agree with him whole-heartedly! http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/opinion/oped/bal-op.keillor16dec16,0,225627.story
