Does America play a part in the future kingdom?

datePosted on 12:18, September 1st, 2008 by Bill Isaacs

Been reading a fascinating book called “The Post American World” by Fareed Zakaria on the change in worldview of America and its impact on the future. One of the things we tend to overlook is how global the world has become in the past 20 years. As an example, the major financial markets of the world are no longer in the USA but in London. The rise of economies in Brazil, Kenya, Venezuela, China and India have transformed the view of how the world trades. Companies which have future plans for growth are looking outside the USA for new markets and its impact on future economic development in this country is unclear. Politically, the USA has become isolated and many leaders are creating alliances which do not include us. Read the rest of this entry »

The color of racism

datePosted on 00:01, June 19th, 2008 by Ray

The American Heritage Dictionary defines racism, 1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others. 2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

Racism is often associated with the white supremacy movement of the 1950′s, or the apartheid era of South African politics, or the racial cleansing in Kosovo, or the actions in WWII Germany by the Nazi party. However, racism is still alive and well today. News articles constantly criticize white leaders who are not politically correct in their speeches.

However, racism is “discrimination or prejudice based on race.” The most basic accusation leveled against white racists is that they “favor one person over another based upon race.” What is NOT popular (politically correct) is to recognize that some black people are equally biased against persons of the white races. Ministerally Speaking; and the Southern Baptist

The following article was posted on HB London’s blog “The Heart of a Pastor“.

I read a small article a few days ago suggesting that the Southern Baptist Church is not as large as it claims to be. Have you ever wondered about that?

“Ministerally speaking” is a phrase that is used from time-to-time to qualify a statistic used by a pastor or Christian leader to estimate the size of their congregation or ministry. There seems to be a lot of estimating going on ??? even, or should I say ‘maybe’ in the Southern Baptist Church.

Are you a Southern Baptist? What would you estimate the membership in your convention to be? Some say 16 million and others, as much as 17 million. What would you say?

I have been to a lot of Southern Baptist churches who claimed to have 26,000 members when in actuality they might have 5 or 6,000 in attendance.

Do numbers really matter? It seems so. Because if you talk to pastors for very long, they will very soon either ask you “how many do you run” or tell you how many they have.

Through the years, I am sure I have “rounded off” a lot of numbers to make myself look better. I was not technically being untruthful .. I was just “rounding off” on the high side. Nobody “rounds off” on the low side.

At the Southern Baptist Convention they will be electing a new president. Six men are running. I can remember in the old days where the leader was basically selected in the ‘back room’ and then presented to the convention for approval. Those days seem to be gone forever.

So ??? two questions I ask you my dear blogging colleague. How many members do you think there are at the Southern Baptist Convention? And, who do you think their new leader will be? A conservative or a member of the new breed? No need to be exact, just “ministerally speaking”. Round it off!

Talk to me .. please!! Consumerism can kill us!

What do you have?

datePosted on 02:06, May 27th, 2008 by Ray

Jars of oilWhen reading the story of the widow and the oil in 2 Kings 4:1-7, I observed some very powerful principles. I used those principles in a sermon titled, “What do you have?”

Here are the key points:

  1. I have something
  2. I must anticipate blessing
  3. I must commit everything
  4. I have more than enough

1. The widow felt that she had nothing. When Elisha asked her, she said, “Your servant has nothing there at all.” Then she added “except a little oil.” Some people tend to keep a “victim” mentality and feel that they are abused and short-changed in everything. But the reality is that we do have SOMETHING! It may be small and insignificant, but we have something.

  • God never asks for more than we have
  • If we only have a little, then God does not require much
  • The question is not “What can you GET?” Rather, it is “What do you HAVE?”

God wants us to count our blessings instead of our battles. He does not call those who are equipped, He equips those He calls! Moses felt that he was incapable of facing pharaoh & the children of Israel. But God said, “What is that in your hand?” and it miraculously was changed into a snake which later became a sign to everyone that God was directing the events.

The “little oil” that seemed so improbable as a means of saving her sons, became the instrument of their salvation. Likewise, God wants to take the insignificant things in our lives and transform them into the solution to our problems. Read the rest of this entry »

Children buried alive

datePosted on 23:09, April 28th, 2008 by Ray

There is an email being circulated about a story from Egypt of two little girls who survived after being buried for 15 days! According to the email, they were fed by “A man wearing shiny white clothes, with bleeding wounds in his hands.” Is this really true? If so, then it is a very exciting event!!

Here is a quote of the email:

Murder Miracle in Egypt

A Muslim man in Egypt killed his wife and then buried her with their infant baby and 8-year old daughter. The girls were buried alive!

He then reported to the police that an uncle killed the kids. 15 days later, another family member died. When they went to bury him, they found the 2 little girls under the sand – ALIVE!

The country is outraged over the incident, and the man will be executed.

The older girl was asked how she had survived. “A man wearing shiny white clothes, with bleeding wounds in his hands, came every day to feed us. He woke up my mom so she could nurse my sister,” she said.
