Kenya Update

Business DestroyedThe dangerous environment in Kenya seems to be improving but it is very slow and the situation is still very tense.

The allAfrica.com site states that there is a “Deal in the Making.” But other reports say that Kenya is still “Armed and Dangerous.” This is especially true in the western region around the city of Eldoret where I have many friends.

Public Radio aired a report recently stating that more than 1000 people have been killed in Kenya due to the unrest there. You can read the report here or listen to it from a link there.

The COG World Missions site has a note from one of our missionaries stating that “Though the situation is very tense, I do not feel we are personally in danger. Certain people are being targeted. This does not include foreigners.” (Read the article here.)

I also received an email that gives a few more details:

  • A small church that I visited in 2004 previously was housing 1500 refugees. Now the number has been reduced to less than 600. At least 4 babies have been born at that church during this crisis. Even though the numbers are down, they still need 200 blankets to serve these people. The blankets are about $6 each. If you would like to help with this need, send me an email at “chief.shep (enter the “at” sign here) gmail.com” giving your name, phone number & what you can do. I will respond as quickly as I can.
  • Our college in Kenya was housing around 100 refugees but now has only four families.

Everyone that I have heard from in that area says basically the same thing: Kenya is still very tense and dangerous. They all ask for our prayers and support.
